Our Reach

The American Cancer Society believes that we will not reach our mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone if we are not inclusive of every community touched by cancer. Research is at the heart of the American Cancer Society’s mission. We have invested more than $5 billion in research since 1946.  The American Cancer Society is unique because we have established mechanisms to turn scientific discoveries into action informing via advocacy through the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), educating communities on cancer risk and prevention, developing cancer screening and early detection guidelines, and supporting patients during and after cancer treatment.

While investigators at the American Cancer Society are focused on cancer, VOICES of Black Women is an opportunity to better understand Black Women’s Health more broadly. As such, we have prioritized the inclusion of Black female scientists on our scientific advisory board with expertise beyond cancer, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, lupus, sexually transmitted infections, and mental health, among others. In parallel, we are building partnerships with stakeholders and organizations across the nation to help develop and facilitate dissemination around these topics as we make new scientific discoveries.
